Davis shines in Oregon Preview meet By FRANK SILOW EUGENE -- Southern Oregon University's Mat Davis turned in a pair of impressive performances Saturday during the Oregon Preview track and field meet at Hayward Field. The former North Medford High sprinter finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 48.65 seconds and took third in the 200 in 21.91. "Those are terrific times for this part of the year," Southern Oregon track coach Dale Fisher said. "He's set some pretty good goals for the season, and he's right on the mark." Among other colleges participating were Western Oregon, Portland State, University of Portland, College of Southern Idaho, Lane Community College, Chemeketa Community College, Linn-Benton Community College and Clackamas Community College. The Raiders had two athletes meet the NAIA qualifying standard for the national meet. Junior Richard Bailey qualified by putting the shot 50 feet, one-half inch, and sophomore thrower Nikki Robertson met the standard with a toss of 140-10 in the discus. Besides taking third in the shot put, Bailey secured fifth in the discus with a mark of 151-2. Teammate Nels Hage placed fourth in the discus (152-5). Robertson's discus throw was good for fourth, and she placed fourth in the shot (38-). Other Southern Oregon highlights were freshman Joe Sheire's fourth in the high hurdles (15.75), a three-way tie in the pole vault (9-6) among Raiders Megan Cummings, Nicole Irons and Melissa Mills and Kena Page's fifth place in the long jump (17-6). "Our outlook is good," said Fisher. "We're progressing very well. We had several personal records by our kids."
