PREP SOCCER Eagles get back on track with shutout MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 2, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Oct. 2, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News EAGLE POINT — Eagle Point boys soccer coach Phil Ortega wasn’t concerned how his team would respond from its first loss of the season only 24 hours before his squad settled in against Cascade Christian. Turns out, that was for good reason. The Eagles, who lost 1-0 on a late goal by Ashland on Tuesday, responded in short time with a solid 3-0 nonleague victory over the Challengers on Wednesday at Eagle Stadium. “We were first to the ball and we didn’t let the loss keep us down,” said Ortega, whose team moved to 6-1-1. “We still played very well against Ashland, who scored in the 76th minute, and had just as many shots as they did. Our kids aren’t fazed by the loss. We controlled the pace of the game today very well and had a lot of attempts today, just a lot of them hit the post.” Christian Bustinza opened the scoring in the 35th minute off a nice through ball by Emmanuel Angel that he collected at the top of the box and rifled a left-footed shot into the net. In the 53rd minute, Angel did the honors after taking a through ball up the middle from Luis Fernando Gutierrez and depositing a 9-yard shot. In the 68th minute, a buildup from the back led to a nice assist by Kevin VanDyke for a blistered shot by Ronaldo Rincones. Goalkeeper Jonel Quintero was forced into making three good saves on dangerous setups by the Challengers. ST. MARY’S 2, PACIFIC/BANDON 1, SO : At Port Orford, St. Mary’s overcame a defensive approach by Pacific/Bandon to earn its second District 5 win in penalty kicks, 4-2. Pacific/Bandon (5-3, 1-2 Dist. 5) broke a scoreless tie in the 51st minute by converting a penalty kick but St. Mary’s (5-2, 3-0) stormed back with an answer when Austin Pena scored on a sensational volley following a direct kick by Jeremy Wu. Despite holding a considerable advantage in shots on goal through regulation and both 10-minute overtime sessions, St. Mary’s was forced into another penalty kick situation. The Crusaders, however, came through again with flying colors by netting each of their first four shots to seal the road win. Girls Soccer CASCADE CHRISTIAN 9, LAKEVIEW 0 : Alex Torano tallied four goals and Cheyanne Auchard added three more to help Cascade Christian to the runaway District 5 victory at U.S. Cellular. Haley Reed got the scoring started in the second minute when she fired a shot that was blocked back toward her by the goalkeeper. On the second effort, Reed’s header found the back of the net for the Challengers (6-2, 2-1 Dist. 5). Jenna Worthington also scored for Cascade, while goalkeeper duties were shared by Jessica Weber and Tiani Alvarez. ROGUE RIVER 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 : At Rogue River, Annie Teehan poured in two goals and added an assist to lead Rogue River to the District 5 victory. Teehan scored both goals off assists by Sequoia Poston, and assisted on a goal by Kassy Staples that gave the Chieftains (4-1, 2-1 Dist. 5) a 2-0 halftime lead.
