Moncada fares well in boxing tournament LAS VEGAS � Fransua Moncada sought out the road less traveled en route to a Regional Golden Gloves title. Moncada, who was part of the founding group at the Bulldog Boxing Club, hadn�t stepped into the ring for an official bout since last November heading into this past weekend�s tournament. To go one better, Moncada didn�t box at all last season and had only two fights in 1999. None of that mattered, however, in Las Vegas as the 18-year-old put several months of hard work in the training room together for a decision over Nevada�s Victor Barrios in the 112-pound finals of the Regional Golden Gloves at the Orleans Hotel. "The kid is really putting it together now and I was very, very impressed with him (at the Golden Gloves)," said trainer Joe Pedrojetti. For his efforts, Moncada was also named outstanding boxer of the tournament in improving to 12-8 in his career. He will advance to the National Golden Gloves tournament scheduled for March 31 to April 6 in Reno. The Bulldog Boxing Club suffered four 3-2 losses by decision in its remaining bouts as Hector Moncada lost to Mario Gaxiola of Nevada at 106 pounds, Lionel Leon fell to 0-3 against Jorge Hernandez of Washington at 125 and Sal Regalado lost to Angel Gonzales of Arizona at 119. The most surprising defeat was pinned on superheavyweight Mike Wilson, who dropped a decision to George Garcia of Arizona. "That was just a classic example of an Olympic-style boxer scoring good straight punches losing to a brawler throwing wild punches from the side," said Pedrojetti.
