But sometimes it happens. The Phoenix girls (10-5 overall, 6-1 Skyline) slipped into Lakeview and took one Tuesday, beating the Honkers (9-4, 5-2 Skyline), 36-34. "It’s frustrating. A big part of the problem was that we never really set up the offense," Lakeview coach Dawn Austin said. "It wasn’t like they played amazing defense and shut us down. "But their press gave us a little bit of a problem, and we struggled reading the defense." The Honkers led 13-10 after one quarter, but the Pirates showed why they are Skyline contenders, taking a 22-19 lead at the half. "They outrebounded us 25-20, but it seemed like a lot more than that," Austin said. "They were really boxing out and getting the key rebounds." The Pirates took a five-point lead into the final 30 seconds of the game before Lakeview’s Jenna Kiely drained her only 3-point basket to cut the lead to two. But the Honkers turned the ball over on their next possession, and the Pirates sealed the game. Kat Cox led Phoenix with 10 points, and Kiely finished with 11 for Lakeview.
