Ashland skiers fare well in competition The Ashland High ski team almost completed a sweep in Southern League slalom events Friday and Saturday at Mount Ashland. On Friday, Ashland won both boys and girls team events. The Grizzly boys triumphed Saturday, but the girls finished second to Lakeview. Ashland�s Zach Williams and Shey Yearsley placed first in the slalom Saturday. On Friday, Williams was runner-up to Jens Odegaard of Lakeview. Kara Ray of Crater won the girls slalom Saturday, while Yearsley finished third. Junior bowler Scales rolls 695 series in Gen X Cory Scales, 16, of Central Point, rolled his first 600 series in the Generation X League at Lava Lanes Monday. The Crater High junior, who averages 157, rolled games 267, 221 and 207 for a 695 series. North, South teams win AAU titles in tournament The North Medford seventh grade and the South Medford Generals White sixth grade teams won division championships Sunday in the Crater Classic AAU boys basketball tournament at Scenic Middle School. North Medford defeated South Medford in the championship game, 65-46. En route to the title, North beat Crater, 65-36, and South Grants Pass, 62-51. North Medford�s Eric and Adam Stroh were selected to the all-tournament team. The South Medford Generals defeated South Grants Pass, 70-56, in the championship game of the 12-team, sixth-grade tournament. South Medford all-tournament selection Michael Harthun scored 27 points to lead four players in double figures. South also received strong post play from Garrett Fiddler. Undefeated South Medford, coached by Jack DeCoste, ran its record to 11-0 on the season. Phoenix-Talent soccer tryouts slated for Feb. 11 The Phoenix-Talent Soccer Club will hold required tryouts for the spring Classic season Feb. 11 at Hagler-James Park in Talent. Tryouts for a boys under-14 team take place from noon to 2 p.m., while sessions for girls under-14 and girls under-11 teams are from 2 to 4 p.m. All participants will need a parental permission signature to try out. New hockey instructor to teach skating classes Mike Meeker is the new professional hockey instructor at The RRRink.
