It didn't take too long to find Lucy, but the dog's precarious perch didn't allow a quick recovery. Garon saw her dog down a slope, tangled in blackberries, unable to move, next to a 15-foot vertical drop above an irrigation canal. Garon was able to clip some vines to free Lucy's head, but couldn't lift the 80-pound retriever to safety. "I was desperate and freaked out," Garon said. "It was like the worst of my fears." But thanks to quick response from Josephine County Animal Protection, the dog was quickly freed. Marci Handley, an animal control officer for the last six years, rigged a harness to pull the Lab to safety, with the help of Garon and a neighbor. "She came right out and took command of the situation," Garon said. "I was distraught and she saved the day. I didn't think anybody would even come out." Donna Vest, technician at the shelter in Merlin, said having three full-time animal control officers has been a blessing. Before a 2014 tax levy dedicated to animal control was approved by voters, Handley was the only full-time control officer. "They're fabulous at what they do," Vest said. "They have a passion just like the rest of us. They're more than willing to go do something like that." "I can't say enough how wonderful it is we got the levy and are able to have three full-time officers."
