Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa, a visitor to the San Francisco fair, arrived in Medford this morning to collect $40 he loaned to a man in the Sixteenth street depot of the Southern Pacific in Oakland Wednesday evening. For the $40, Mr. Johnson has a check for $1150.15. The main from Iowa was resting before the departure of the train, when a smooth and well-dressed young man approached him and began a conversation. The young man said his name was Hall, and that he worked in the postoffice at Medford, but could not get home because he had no money. He produced the $1150.15 check, and offered it as security for a $40 loan. A man nearby told John it was a good proposition, so the $40 was produced and the check turned over. Johnson was told to go to the postoffice as soon as he reached this city and get his money back. he did. Lee M. Hall is employed as a clerk in the local office, but he has not been away from Medford for months. Johnson appeared at the window and asked for a man by the name of Hall, but when he appeared he beheld a "Hall" he never saw before. "You're not the Hall I met in Oakland," was all that he said after being convinced. The mater was reported to the local police, who reported the confidence game to the Southern Pacific authorities. SURFACING ROADS WITH SHOT GRAVEL BEGUN IN EARNEST Surfacing of highways with buckshot gravel has begun in earnest by the county under supervision of Roadmaster Smith. Kings highway is the first road to be improved. This will be followed by improving the Eagle Point, Hillcrest and other roads. The county recently purchased the buckshot gravel deposit on McAndrews hill, northeast of the city, and has installed machinery that enables the handling of a great mass of material at a very cheap figure.
