The fourth-seeded Vikings will next face No. 1 Scio in the semifinals Saturday. Scio beat Salem Academy, 70-36, in another quarterfinal. Sophomore quarterback Haiden Schaan was 18 of 33 passing for 222 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the No. 5 Challengers (7-4), who entered halftime tied at 14. His 55-yard rushing score gave Cascade Christian a 14-7 advantage in the opening quarter, but that would be Cascade Christian’s only lead of the game. Vale (9-1) finished with 411 yards of total offense. Zack Fralich ran for 61 yards on 12 carries, including a 12-yard scoring sprint, for the Challengers, who had 381 yards of offense. Jake Booker made five catches for 58 yards and a TD, Chase Wager had four grabs for 45 yards and a score and Carson Cochran had three receptions for 46 yards. Wager recorded 10 tackles and an interception, Fralich had an interception and Matt Miller made nine tackles. He finished the 5,000-meter elite race in 15 minutes, 32 seconds out of 189 runners. For his effort, Monroe earned the chance to race at nationals Dec. 5 in Portland. Derek Tripp was 29th (16:17) and Erik Olsen 59th (16:39) for the Comets, who claimed fourth out of 21 teams representing seven states. In the girls race, Crater’s Jordan Monroe was 42nd (19:12). Water Polo ASHLAND SPLITS: At Corvallis, the Ashland boys beat Hood River, 8-6, to take third place at the state tournament. The Hood River girls beat the Grizzlies, 11-2, sending Ashland to a fourth-place finish. For the Ashland boys, goalkeeper Vincent Wright had 13 blocks, Erik Oline five goals and two steals, Devon Lancaster one goal and four steals and Luke Abell and Finn Griffin one goal and five steals apiece. For the Grizzly girls, goalkeeper Izzy Nicolier recorded 17 blocks and two steals and Zee Harrison and Amelia Covert Zeve one goal apiece. Wright and Abell were named to the first-team all-state list, and Oline, Griffin and Lancaster earned second-team recognition. Covert Zeve received second-team all-state honors and Laurel Tappert received honorable mention.
