Those same students also were excited to hear that Smith would be joining them next school year as principal of North Medford. “He’s a cool dude and seems really friendly,” said junior Cory Reece, after giving Smith a quick hug in passing. Although he didn't attend Hedrick, Reece was one of the two North students who served on the school district’s hiring committee, and he seemed pleased with its selection. Smith, 50, will replace Ron Beick, 59, who retires June 26 after 21 years at NMHS, including nearly nine years as principal. Smith will assume command of the school July 1, although he is not expected to begin work full-time until August. His new salary will be between $111,356 to $117,004. The Medford School District advertised statewide for the position, and a committee of district administrators and school board members, as well as North Medford staff, students and parents, interviewed four candidates — three of them were local — the last week in April and chose two finalists. The next day, a small committee of district administrators and board members interviewed Smith and the other finalist a second time before Superintendent Brian Shumate made the final decision. Smith's appointment was announced at the School Board meeting Monday. “Dan has a successful track record as a middle school principal and is well-respected by kids, parents and staff,” Shumate said. “I think he’ll bring a positive energy to North and really push the school forward,” he added. Shumate said the district will begin advertising the Hedrick principal position immediately and he hopes to have someone in place by early this summer. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Northwest Christian University, his master’s degree in education from Southern Oregon University and his doctorate in education from George Fox University. Over the past 23 years, he’s served as a special education and career and technical education teacher at South Medford High School, vice principal and athletic director of North Middle School in Grants Pass, principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Grants Pass, principal of North Middle School and, for the last five years, principal of Hedrick, where he oversees 873 seventh- and eighth-graders and 69 teachers and classified staff. As principal of NMHS, he’ll oversee more than 1,600 students and 133 staff. In the coming months, Smith said he’ll be meeting with Beick to tour North’s facilities and for updates on all the school’s initiatives and will be looking for a new vice principal to replace Joe Cramer, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Before making any changes, Smith said he wants to conduct a full assessment of the school’s programs and consult with staff, students and parents. “Like somebody said, ‘Before you tear down a fence, you want to know why it was put it up,’ ” he said. Smith also will be working closely with Shumate to implement “pathways”— academic, artistic, career-tech and pre-professional opportunities — for students at the high school. During his six-year stint at South Medford, Smith helped set up the Toyota Technical Education Network, placing students in internships with local technicians. He also coordinated the Foundations Program, in partnership the city of Medford and the Rogue Valley Community Development Corporation, giving students hands-on experience renovating blighted homes in west Medford. “(Shumate’s pathways concept) is right in my wheelhouse because of my career and technical background, and it’s his vision that’s got me really excited about working for North,” Smith said. Smith's also been charged with improving the school’s graduation rate from 76.4 percent in 2013-14 to 80 percent by 2017, 90 percent by 2020 and 100 percent by 2025 in accordance with the School Board goals and the state’s "40-40-20" objective. “I think North Medford High School is full of possibilities and has all the makings of a top high school in the state,” Smith said, "and my vision is that North will be the place to be for high school students in the Rogue Valley.” Reach education reporter Teresa Thomas at 541-776-4497 or [email protected] .
