Cal-Davis wraps SOU in wrestling ASHLAND � For the second time this season the University of California-Davis wrestling team defeated Southern Oregon University and denied the Raiders its first 10-win season since 1989-90. The Aggies captured six of 10 bouts and secured the school�s first 10-win season as a NCAA Division I school with a 19-15 come-from-behind victory over the sixth-ranked NAIA Raiders (9-4) at McNeal Pavilion Wednesday. After trailing 6-3 in the team score, the Aggies (10-7) took control of the dual with four consecutive wins starting with Brandon Arsenault�s 4-3 decision at 197-pounds and culminating with Urijah Faber�s 17-5 major decision at 133. Raider senior Jeremy Wynia cut the Aggie margin to seven (16-9) with a 7-5 overtime thriller over Dallen Phillips at 141, but UCD�s Josh Sternberg clinched his team�s triumph with a decisive 7-1 outcome at 149. The dual culminated with a battle of freshman, and Raider Scott Armstrong erased a 7-2 deficit by taking Mike Font down to his back and posting a second-period pin. "(UCD) did a great of job accumulating riding time tonight," Raider coach Mike Ritchey said. "Our seniors wrestled well, and our freshmen (Sills, Murphy) lost close bouts against experienced opponents. We just needed a break, and we didn�t create too many opportunities." The opportunity could have come at 125, where sophomore Nolan Harris squandered a 4-0 first-period lead in a 9-7 setback to freshman Tommy Schurkamp. "The dual was a good challenge for our team to have at this point in the season, and UC Davis showed that we have some weaknesses," Ritchey said. Colin Murphy, 7-1; 157-Scott Armstrong (SOU) pinned Mike Font, 3:41 Bowling GRANTS PASS � Randy Cochran was in a zone very few bowlers ever achieve Monday night at Caveman Bowl. The 45-year-old Grants Pass bowler rolled back-to-back 300�s to open a series, then continued with six consecutive strikes in the third game for 30 strikes in a row. Cochran finally missed, leaving the 7-pin in the seventh frame of the third game and finished with a 247. Cochran�s 847 series was a career-high. As the pins kept falling in the third game, Cochran began thinking about a 900 series. "I really felt like it could happen," said Cochran. "It�s only happened four times in the history of bowling." Cochran, who holds a 226 average, is no stranger to perfect games, having posted 31 in his 21-year bowling career. He�s had six since September. "I�ve never had a groove like that before," said Cochran. "It was euphoric." As far as Cochran knows, no other local bowler has rolled two 300 games in the same series. "Once you start getting into it you start dreaming about what could be," said Cochran. "It�s like hitting a lottery." Junior Bowling �� Holly Gibson, 15, of Central Point registered the high series of the season for girl junior bowlers in the Generation X league at Lava Lanes Monday. Gibson put together games of 214, 262 and 188 for a 664 series. Last year�s junior bowler of the year from Roxy Ann Lanes has a 183 average.
