RAIDER ROUNDUP Weber, Thompson boost SOU in OT MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 5, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Nov. 5, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News ASHLAND — It took two entire halves, but Simpson finally stopped making shots Tuesday and the 17th-ranked Southern Oregon men’s basketball team scored the first 10 points of overtime to bank a 90-78 win at Riehm Arena. Tim Weber registered the first triple-double in Brian McDermott’s 19 years as head coach of SOU — 10 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds — and Eric Thompson was right at his average with 27 points and 12 boards for the Raiders (3-0). SOU approached desperation mode down 66-61 when Simpson’s Rufus Humphrey was called for a personal foul and a technical foul with 4:34 remaining. Thompson made four straight free throws, and his 3-pointer with 3:34 left put the Raiders up 70-68. Leading 75-72 after Weber hit Joel Spear for a back-door layup, the Raiders failed to get the stop they needed as Jonnie Washburn’s 3-pointer with 27 seconds left ultimately sent the game to overtime. The Redhawks shot 57 percent in the first half (17-for-30) and 50 percent in the second (12-for-24) but went 1-for-11 in the extra frame. Spear, who was 6-for-7 with 13 points and five assists, got free for another layup to start overtime, and after a Simpson miss, Weber found Thompson for his fourth and final triple. Jacob Kaler stopped the Redhawks, who led 38-35 at the half, from pulling away much earlier with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting, and Jordan West went 7-for-11 with 14 points, eight boards and two overtime buckets. Weber produced despite an atypical 2-for-10 performance from the floor on a night when SOU went 32-for-64. He has 21 assists in his last two games. Four different Redhawks reached double figures: Anthony Williams (18 points), Washburn (15), Marc Kirkland (14) and Dalton Thacker (12). SOU isn’t the first Cascade Conference team that’s been put on its heels by the Redhawks. They opened the season with a win at Eastern Oregon. The Raiders have won nine straight in the series. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Redding, Calif., on Nov. 25. Women’s Basketball SOU 101, SIMPSON 72: At Ashland, 21st-ranked Southern Oregon claimed a 24-point halftime lead cruised to the nonleague win. Kristen Schoenherr tallied 17 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals, Alexi Smith had 17 points and five boards and Bree Park chipped in 11 points with three 3-pointers off the bench for the Raiders (3-0 overall). SOU shot 58 percent from the field (35-for-60), as Schoenherr went 6-for-8, Smith was 8-for-13 and Park was 4-for-5. The Raiders were at 64 percent in the first half while the Redhawks (0-3) struggled to 36 percent before heating up in the second. Esther Wofford scored 26 points, helping Simpson keep pace after halftime. Twenty-four of SOU’s 35 buckets were assisted. Ashley Claussen was credited with six, Autumn Durand had 14 points and four assists, and reserve Demi Sahlinger contributed eight points and five assists. The Raiders have shot at least 49 percent with 30-plus makes in all three games this season. They’ll travel to Metro State (Colo.) this weekend for exhibitions Friday against Regis University (Colo.) and Saturday against Metro State. For Simpson, Katie Lenik scored 12 and Fallon Greenshaw had 11.
