PUBLIC SAFETY Fire destroys home in rural Central Point Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 4:08 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 4:08 PM » RELATED CONTENT • Truax Road Fire » Social News CENTRAL POINT — A home in rural Central Point has been deemed a total loss after a fire tore through the property, sending a column of smoke into the sky that was visible from Medford. Jackson County Fire District 3 responded to the fire, at 7516 Truax Road — located near Truax's intersection with Table Rock Terrace — at 1:21 p.m., according to dispatch logs. Fire officials said no one was home at the time, and that no one was injured. It's not known whether there were any pets inside. Rick Calvary, who lives down the street, said he had been outside doing work in his yard, then came back inside his home for a few minutes when he was alerted to the blaze. "My wife came back in and said, 'Oh my God, the red house is on fire,'" Calvary said. He said flames were everywhere. "Just engulfed," Calvary said. "The whole thing was, just in minutes, it was gone. It probably took 10 minutes and it was gone." Battalion chief Bryan Cohee said five engines responded to the scene. Firefighters found the garage ablaze, with flames spreading to about half the home, Cohee said. Two water tenders also arrived on scene. "It was a defensive operation from the start," Cohee said. "The residence was a total loss. There was nothing salvageable, unfortunately, by the time we arrived on scene out here." Two more crews from the Oregon Department of Forestry also responded, as the flames spread to some nearby wildland. "It looks like maybe a half-acre involved," Cohee said. How many people lived at the property was not available. Crews were still at work getting the fire completely out at about 3 p.m. "It's going to be a challenging overhaul," Cohee said. "The house has been added on a couple times. There's multiple roofs in there, roofs on top of roofs, so it makes it really challenging. There's a lot of hidden fire in there we're trying to get on top of." The cause is not yet known. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
