Mail Tribune 100: May 5, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 5, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 5, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 5, 1916 "LET KATY DO IT" AT PAGE THEATER Another varied and well rounded program of Triangle photoplays open today at the Page theater. "Let Katy Do It," the Griffith production, is an ideal final picture, in that its wholesome natural humor and pathos leaves so pleasant a taste in the mouth. Jane Grey and Tully Marshall are the leading figures, and the cast embraces charming children who do a great deal of the important acting and the results are delightful. The costliest production yet made by the Keystone studio for the Triangle program—and they all have been costing a pretty penny—is that for "The Great Pearl Tangle" featuring the Metropolitan star, Sam Bernard. Mr. Bernard's part is that of a designer in a fashionable costumers. A fashion show like those given by a few of the great metropolitan stores is a feature that gives opportunity for what is probably the greatest beauty show ever filmed. Gowns of real importance and a score of models picked from the hundreds of screen beauties now in Los Angeles contribute to a really brilliant ensemble that is yet subordinated to the comedy of situations and characterization built for Mr. Bernard and in which he has proven himself a screen star of real brilliancy. SENIORS TO PRESENT "MERELY MARY ANN" The cast of the senior high school play, "Merely Mary Ann," is rehearsing regularly and is showing wonderful improvement. It is now prepared to put on the finishing touches. The play promises to be a real dramatic success. The plot of the play is unique and of a very pleasing nature. Its theme is hinged on the role of a little boarding house girl who blacks boots and runs errands for a cross old landlady. Humor and pathos are so delicately interwoven that one is seldom separated from the other. One must smile at the simple, innocent things Mary does and says, but beneath it is a deeper feeling of heartfelt sympathy for the poor, abused little girl. In the end, however, all turns out well and happily. Nothing in the form of a sad farewell is left in the minds of the audience. The play will be staged on the 16th of this month at the Page theater.
