Police search for clues in deadly explosion inside WWII tank Comment By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted Oct. 28, 2015 at 11:30 AM By The Associated Press Posted Oct. 28, 2015 at 11:30 AM » Social News BEND — Oregon authorities are trying to find out what caused an explosion inside a World War II-era tank that killed two people, turning to video shot of the military vehicle at a public firing range as the blast occurred. Paramedics tried to save the victims, but they died from their injuries after the explosion Tuesday afternoon at the gun range east of Bend. Their identities have not been released. Rescuers were able to speak with one of the victims before he or she died, Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson told KTVZ-TV (http://bit.ly/1MU5BNB ). There was no word on what led to the explosion, but Nelson said footage shot during the blast could help them learn more about what happened. "There was a camera crew on scene, and they were filming the tank," Nelson told KTVZ. "As to what they were filming or why they were filming, those details haven't been found out yet." The tank sat in a field, blocked off by police cars, and officers worked beneath floodlights overnight to gather evidence. Authorities said there is no risk to the public. "This is a tragic day," Nelson told the television station. "Two families lost loved ones, and our hearts and prayers go out to those that loved ones today."
