Police later learned the suspicious person was a teen walking to a friend’s home while holding a BB gun, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. Just before 2 p.m., a citizen called police to say a young man with a gun was walking south on Holly Street near Monroe Street, Medford police Sgt. Tim Doney said. The call prompted a temporary lock-down of South Medford High School and Sacred Heart School. Both schools reopened within one hour, Doney said. Police swarmed the area and spotted a teenager who ran when an officer approached him. The teen fled through a nearby yard and was later located by police, who learned he had run away from a local youth shelter. Doney said the teen, who was returned to the shelter, was not the person seen with the gun. "He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," Doney said. Later in the afternoon, police learned about the BB gun-carrying teenager, who apparently dropped the gun in a bush and walked away when officers arrived at the scene, George said.
