Mustangs gain split against GP Chris Empio went the distance to pick up his first win of the season to lead the Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team to a 12-4 Game 2, Area 4 win over the Grants Pass Nuggets in a doubleheader Wednesday at Miles Field. The Nuggets took the opener, 9-4. Empio struck out seven and none of the four runs scored off him were earned. The Mustangs sent 11 men to the plate and took advantage of three Grants Pass� errors, three walks and two wild pitches while collecting only three hits during an eight-run third inning. Evan McCarthur led Medford with two hits while Scott Hyde had two hits for the Nuggets. Grants Pass got three hits apeice from Seth Pietsch, who also homered, and Sam Jarrett in the opener. The Mustangs (11-7 overall, 3-3 Area 4) travel to Salem to compete in the Willamette Classic today. L � Sammis. 2B � GP: Wilson, Sammis, Hyde; M: Gonzales, Bruce. � COLTS 6-7, HAWKS 2-14 � Kevin O�Shea blasted a three-run, first-inning home run to lead the South Medford Colts American Legion baseball team to a win over the visiting Klamath Falls Hawks in the first game of a doubleheader. O�Shea�s homer, his second of the season, came during a four-run first and was more than enough for Colts pitcher Clint Rodreick. Rodreick struck out five and gave up three hits and two unearned runs over seven innings of work. The Hawks rebounded in Game 2 with a six-run outburst in the fourth inning to pull away. The split left the Colts with a 4-6 record.
