Suzanne Cusick will replace Jay Hummel, who announced March 2 that he would resign following the current school year. Cusick, who taught in Ashland in the 1980s and whose four children graduated from Ashland High School, will begin her new position July 1. “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Dr. Cusick back to Ashland," Ashland school board Chairman Jim Westrick said through a press release emailed to media outlets. "She is an outstanding educator who impressed us all with her wealth of experience, coupled with a deep caring and commitment to kids.” After leaving Ashland, Cusick worked in the Hillsboro School District for about 15 years, half of that time as assistant superintendent. In 2008 she was named superintendent of the Longview School District. She retired from that position in 2014. Cusick holds a doctorate in educational policy from the University of Oregon and a master's in music literature and vocal performance from the University of South Dakota. The district will continue its search for Hummel's permanent replacement during Cusick's tenure. “It is an honor to be selected by the Ashland School District Board of Directors to serve as interim superintendent for Ashland Public Schools for the 2016-2017 school year," Cusick said. "It was a pleasure to teach in Ashland and to watch our four children develop into successful adults as a result of their experiences in the Ashland School District.
