By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune October 03. 2014 11:37AM Central Point police make arrest in assault with pipe CENTRAL POINT — A Central Point man is in jail for allegedly beating a man with a metal pipe Thursday, possibly in retaliation for a prior confrontation between them. Central Point police reported Christopher Pitts, 43, of the 500 block of Briarwood Drive, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Randall Ross Steck, a 35-year-old transient. Pitts remained in the Jackson County Jail Friday, held on a second-degree assault charge, a Measure 11 offense. His bail was set at $1 million. The incident took place around 7 a.m. Thursday. Officers responded to 16 N. Front St. after receiving reports of a man who had been assaulted with a pipe. Police found Steck and determined the assault took place behind a business in the 400 block of North Front Street. Steck was transported to Providence Medford Medical Center for treatment. Hospital officials said Friday he was no longer listed there and that an update on his condition was not available. Central Point detectives identified Pitts as a person of interest following the assault and contacted him. Police Chief Kris Allison said he agreed to come down to the station for an interview about four hours after the incident. He was cooperative with officers, she said, and was arrested and transported to the jail following the interview. "It is actually initiating another investigation," Police Chief Kris Allison said. "We do believe this wasn't a random type of assault. We're looking at a motive of possible retaliation." For what exactly remains unknown.
