"We’re kind of desperate right now," says Viola Reaves, a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The IOOF hall, at 483 Fourth St., Gold Hill, is holding a membership drive today at 7 p.m. The old brick building houses the town’s 110-year-old chapter of the IOOF, says Reaves. Reaves says the hall, owned by the international organization, is in danger of being sold if more people don’t start attending meetings. "The last few meetings we’ve only had four or five people. We have to have at least five to officially hold the meeting or we’ll lose our charter and (the main organization) can do what they want with the building." Reaves says her husband persuaded her to join the service organization several years ago. He has since died, as have many others in the order’s membership. Advertisement "People get old, or busy," says Reaves. But Reaves says the civic organization has both history and a noble purpose which she is unwilling to see end. "When we first came here, everybody belonged to the Odd Fellows and the Grange," says Reaves. If enough people attend tonight’s meeting, Reaves says the organization has a chance to succeed.
