By Vickie Aldous Mail Tribune October 30. 2014 2:57PM Volunteer award goes to Habitat for Humanity helper Rogue Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteer Jan Albrecht has been honored with Jackson County's Community Service Award for November. A volunteer with the nonprofit organization since January 2012, Albrecht received the award from the Jackson County Board of Commissioners this week. "It always amazes me what gets done here through volunteers and nonprofits," said Commissioner Don Skundrick, adding that Rogue Valley Habitat for Humanity is one of the best local organizations. Albrecht does office tasks such as filing and data entry about donors and volunteers. She also helps with fundraisers, including Christmas wrapping events and fundraising dinners, Rogue Valley Habitat for Humanity members said. Albrecht is a bright light in the organization's office and one of its most reliable volunteers, members said. She encouraged others to volunteer for the organization. "We're always looking for good folks to help out," she said. Albrecht also urged people to shop for windows, doors and other home supplies at Rogue Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore, located at 2233 S. Pacific Highway, Medford. Profits from the store help fund the organization's mission to work with low-income families to build houses. Recipients of houses contribute 500 hours of sweat equity toward their homes and pay back the cost through 30-year, no-interest loans. Rogue Valley Habitat for Humanity believes in giving a hand up, not handouts, members said. The organization is wrapping up construction on its 53rd and 54th houses and is about to start on its 55th and 56th homes, members said.
