Any ideas? — Larry E., White City   We're admirers of your brand of conservation, Mr. E. Throw in some Starbucks and a pre-deadline Red Bull, and you might just have yourself a bandwagon. We too have smelled chlorine as we water our plants or wash our cars in the summer sun, so we decided to drop a line to Laura Hodnett, public information coordinator with the Medford Water Commission. It turns out that chlorine smell you've noticed is chlorine, and it's in your water year-round. "The water is warmer. Chlorine is naturally going to want to dissipate," Hodnett said.  "When the water gets warmer, you're going to smell the chlorine, even if it's at the same levels."  Hodnett explained that the Medford Water Commission does add processed water sourced from the Rogue River to its spring-water source, but Hodnett said chlorine levels in both sources are similar and consistently on the low side of acceptable levels. "We really add a minimal amount of chlorine,” Hodnett said. " We're allowed 4 parts per million, and we put it at .5." "It's just enough so we don't get any of the bacterial growth in the system," said Water Quality Administrator Rosie Pindilli. "We monitor; we collect samples all over the system twice a week every week." Pindilli explained that they're required to have traces of chlorine, or else MWC has to distribute public notices telling people to boil the water before they drink it. Refrigerating the tap water reduces the chlorine smell, said Pindilli and Hodnett . “As soon as it gets cooler, you usually don’t smell or taste it," Pindilli said.
