Three weeks before starting the 2015 campaign, Casey still isn’t sure exactly what his lineup will look like as the Beavers head through a bit of a transition after two seasons where they were legitimate national title contenders. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been in a position where I can’t tell you three weeks before the season how few guys I could tell you are going to start, position-wise,” Casey said Thursday evening, the day before the Beavers began full team practice for the upcoming campaign. “And that’s a little bit concerning, but it’s also a little bit exciting. It’s a challenge. It can be the recipe for a disaster or it could be a recipe for a perfect storm. We’ll just figure it out as she goes.” The Beavers lost the likes of Ben Wetzler, Jace Fry and Scott Schultz on the mound. That’s two of their three weekend starters last season as well as Schultz, who could start or come out of the bullpen. They also lost Michael Conforto, Dylan Davis, Andy Peterson and Kavin Keyes, who were mainstays in the middle of the lineup the past few seasons. “Those guys were pretty special players and the people that we lost had a huge impact in our program,” Casey said. With so many holes, Casey expects a big freshman class to be called upon to play major roles if the Beavers hope to navigate a difficult schedule — that sees them play Pac-12 series at Arizona State, UCLA, Oregon, Washington and Stanford — successfully. “It may be the toughest schedule in the nation, so that will be another challenge,” Casey said. Who those freshmen will be is yet to be determined, but they will play. And Casey said they won’t be the scapegoat if things don’t go well. “We really have a young club and I think this is probably the last time that I’m going to allow myself to talk about that because I think that’s a pretty good excuse,” he said. “… We are what we are and we have a lot of first-year players and they’re going to play.” It’s not like the Beavers aren’t accustomed to having freshman start and play key roles over the years. Last season, despite a veteran team, shortstop Trevor Morrison, catcher Logan Ice and infielder Caleb Hamilton all saw extensive action. Two years ago, Andrew Moore burst on the scene and went 14-1 as a starter. Moore is still around and, along with fellow junior Jeff Hendrix, will be called upon to provide more vocal leadership this season. “In order to get to the places we need to be, we know we need to step up and be the leaders of this team,” Moore said. “We’ve both been to (the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska) so we know what it takes to get there and what the team needs to do, so we’ve definitely both been talking and thinking up ideas on how to get the team going to ultimately be able to get to our goal of Omaha.” Both will lean on their experiences of feeling like they belonged as freshmen, thanks to the encouragement and support of the upperclassmen. The message Moore received was simple. “It’s just the same baseball game you’ve been playing your whole life so that’s the same thing we’re trying to instill in these guys,” Moore said. Added Hendrix: “One of the beautiful things about this game is it really doesn’t have an age limit, it’s up to the person playing to decide how good they want be. It doesn’t matter if they’re 19, 20, 18, 21, 24. It’s just really the work they put in and the mindset they have.” Moore and sophomore Jake Thompson are expected to fill two of the three weekend starting positions on the mound, and Casey said the third spot will likely be filled by a freshman. Freshmen will also play key roles out of the bullpen as he expects five rookies to see some kind of action there. Freshman most certainly will be called upon to play in the field as well. “We will live with some of the mistakes, those that come from the game being the teacher, but the other thing is we probably don’t have the freedom to take them out and not play them because we will have to replace them with other freshmen,” Casey said. “We’re just young, and like I said, today will be a day we talk about that and after that we need to go to work.” The newcomers have a fall season under their belts and Hendrix said they have all made positive strides. “It’s definitely a process but I think everyone’s starting to realize that no one’s more important than the other and we need to place each other in front of ourselves,” he said.
