After the Black Tornado won the opener, 25-17, the Cavers battled back to take Game 2, 25-16. North then edged its visitor, 27-25, 25-23, in the last two sets to seal the triumph. Junior outside hitter Emily Carter led the Black Tornado with 15 kills, three aces and seven digs, while senior setter Taylor Otoski contributed six aces, 26 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Anna Lorenz turned in nine digs and freshman middle blocker Adriane McLemore had five kills and two blocks for North (1-1, 1-1 SWC). The Tornado owned a large lead in the final game before Grants Pass charged back. North used aggressive serving to overcome some errors and close it out. THURSTON 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: At Springfield, Thurston captured the Southwest Conference match, 25-20, 24-26, 25-11, 25-20. Nicole Bell recorded 14 kills, 12 digs and two aces and freshman Alyssa Vaughn had 12 kills, 12 digs and two aces for South Medford in its season opener. Kelsey Bartlett registered 35 assists for the Panthers. ASHLAND 3, PHOENIX 2: At Phoenix, Ashland edged Phoenix, 25-23, 25-21, 11-25, 18-25, 15-9, in nonleague action. Grace Lenthe had seven kills, Ellie Case six kills and four blocks and Olivia Rooney six kills for the Grizzlies (4-0). Jordan Tilley notched 22 assists, two kills and two aces and Myla Norvell 18 digs for Ashland. Adriana Mereida-Ford recorded 17 kills, Sydney Amundsen 16 kills and Olivia Young eight kills for Phoenix. Karlie Richardson turned in 42 assists and Lyzett Guiterrez 12 digs for the Pirates (1-1). HIDDEN VALLEY 3, EAGLE POINT 1: At Eagle Point, Hidden Valley rallied to win the nonleague match, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21. McKenzie Cushman recorded 10 kills, 22 assists and four aces, Ashley Hyde nine kills and two aces and Megan York 43 digs for the Mustangs (2-0). Kylene Briggs had 10 kills and seven digs, Camryn Shumate eight assists and six digs, Megan Ayres 11 assists and seven digs and Shae Grady 15 digs for Eagle Point (1-4). CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, NORTH VALLEY 2: At Merlin, Cascade Christian pulled away late for a 19-25, 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 15-12 nonconference triumph. The Challengers (5-0) broke an 11-all tie in the fifth set to secure the match. Senior middle hitter Madigan Smith amassed 18 kills and sophomore right-side hitter Nicole Morse notched 13 for the Challengers, who received seven kills and 20 digs from outside hitter Paige Bruce. For the Knights (1-2), junior outside hitters Haleigh Wagman had 17 kills, 21 digs, three blocks and three aces and Ambur DeChenne had 10 kills and 14 digs. Junior libero Autumn Westergren had 15 digs and junior setter Taryn King 27 assists. GLIDE 3, ST. MARY’S 2: At Glide, Glide served well in the fifth set and came away with a 25-18, 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-9 nonleague win. Crusaders sophomore middle hitter Claire Hawkins racked up nine kills and seven blocks while libero Emily Eccleston had 17 digs and was 21-for-22 from the service line with two aces. The Crusaders (1-5) also got five kills from Dakota Rothfus. MYRTLE POINT 3, ST. MARY’S 1: At Myrtle Point, St. Mary’s sophomore middle hitter Claire Hawkins had a big match in the Crusaders’ 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18 loss. Hawkins had 16 blocks and eight kills and was 17-for-18 serving with six aces. Dakota Rothfus was 11-for-11 on serves to go with four aces and five kills for the Crusaders (1-6), while Aessa Catt was 14-for-16 serving with five blocks and Ashley Rietman 18-for-18 serving. ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, RIDDLE 1: At Riddle, Mahkayla Sommers recorded 10 service aces and libero Halona Jackson had eight digs and passed well as Illinois Valley won, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21. Alex LaFlamme turned in four kills for the Cougars (2-1), who tallied 25 service aces. PROSPECT 3, CANYONVILLE CHRISTIAN 0: At Canyonville, Prospect’s strong serving helped it to its first win in a nonconference sweep, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-16. Both Haylee VanWormer and Taelor Thompson went 19-for-20 serving for the Cougars (1-3). VanWormer added eight assists while Ashli Riel logged 18 digs and a pair of kills. The Cougars’ Baley VanWormer added four kills and a block. CHILOQUIN 3, ROGUE RIVER 0: At Rogue River, Chiloquin earned a 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Rogue River. Water Polo ASHLAND SWEEPS: At Ashland, the Ashland girls team downed Medford, 17-2, and the Grizzly boys beat Medford, 15-4, in the season-opening matches at Southern Oregon University. For the Ashland girls, Kelsey Gida recorded four goals and Sabrina Scoggin and Amelia Zeve each had three goals. For Medford, Rayna Zohar and Marissa Drake scored. For the Grizzly boys, Tristan Gavin led the way with six goals while drawing four kickouts and winning all four sprints he was involved in. Erik Oline and Finn Griffin both had four goals and goalkeeper Vincent Wright recorded 15 blocks. Medford's scores were by Bram Gibson, Cyrus Christianson, Carter Hazen and Micah Mills.
