"People have stopped asking me when it's going to start," joked Airport Director Bern Case. Visible from Highway 62, the two-story terminal is being built by Adroit Construction of Ashland and is being paid for through federal grants and 30-year revenue bonds. The bonds will be paid back through a passenger charge of $4.50 per ticket. Much of the steel structure has already been put together, giving some idea of what the final building will look like. Despite the cold weather, the construction is proceeding on schedule and is about 25 percent complete. Case expects to move in by January. "It kind of gives you a split personality," said Case. "It's going so well, but there are so many things to keep track of." At three times the size of the existing terminal, it will have a larger passenger holding area, an observation area and a restaurant on the second floor that will provide food for screened and nonscreened passengers. The Transportation Security Administration will have a larger baggage screening area but its offices will be at the airport's current administrative building. The terminal will feature second-story loading bridges that will make it easier for passengers to board their planes. Anyone who has visited the airport recently will notice a large concrete area between the old terminal and the new one. This tarmac will be used for planes that park in front of the new terminal. Construction of a new air traffic control tower should also begin sometime this year. At 100 feet, the $3.6 million tower project will be taller than the existing 60-foot structure that sits atop the old terminal, which will be leveled once a new terminal is complete. The new tower, about 300 yards northwest of the existing facility, needs to be taller to properly monitor the entire runway, which is longer than when the original tower was built. The base of the tower is 28 feet by 62 feet, but the tower itself is 28 feet by 28 feet with a total 3,600 square-feet of usable space. Once the new terminal is built, the old one along with the existing tower will be torn down and will become a new loading area for planes.
