The Pirates went on to topple the Crusaders 2-1 at St. Mary's High. Jennifer Bones didn't score any goals for District 6-leading Phoenix during the Pirates' 2-1 girls victory over St. Mary's Thursday. But the senior captain played an important role in both scores at the Crusaders' field. "Jennifer put an extreme amount of pressure on their defense," Phoenix coach Dan Sporrer said. "She played one of her toughest games. She created a lot of havoc." Phoenix took a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the match on a goal by Mara Supan. Supan's score came off a rebound from 12 yards out off a shot by Bones. St. Mary's countered at the 23rd minute when Emily Smith won the ball out of the air on a goal kick, took one touch and then drilled a low shot into the corner of the net from 25 yards. "St. Mary's was pumped up," Sporrer said. "They went hard to the ball the whole game and showed more enthusiasm than us in the first half. In the second half we made some adjustments and picked up our intensity." At the 63rd minute, Bones got loose on the wing and boomed a rocket that hit a defender in the hand in the penalty area. Lisa Perry converted on the penalty kick for the game-winner when the low shot went off Crusader goalie Annie Maurer's hand into the net. "Lisa placed it well and had enough pace on it that it didn't matter," said Sporrer. Phoenix had difficulty containing St. Mary's freshman forward Smith and sophomore halfback Margo Chamberlain. "They are a handful," said Sporrer. "Both are very dynamic players." The Pirates received strong efforts from goalie Tara Curtis and defenders Chelsi Clark, Jessica Montgomery, Jessica Prisbrey and Amber Fry. "They put pressure on Emily (Smith) and Margo (Chamberlain)," said Sporrer, "and started several attacks out of the back line.'' The Pirates welcomed back unanimous first-team all-leaguer Annie Kulig, who had been out 2 weeks with a torn ankle ligament. Kulig came off the bench and provided a needed spark in about 50 minutes of action. The Pirates completed the first half of the District 6 season with a 6-0-1 record and begin the second part of the eight-school round-robin by hosting North Valley at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hagler-James Park. ROGUE RIVER 6, NORTH VALLEY 2 -- At Rogue River, Allison Bailey scored three goals and Casey Pete added two for Rogue River in its District 6 win. Pete put the Chieftains on the board at the six-minute mark and following a game-tying North Valley score, Bailey pushed Rogue River ahead for good 18 minutes later. Bailey and Pete also had assists while Alison Marland chipped in with a goal. With the win, the Chieftains upped their District 6 record to 5-2. MAZAMA 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 -- At Klamath Falls, Dena Young and Mindy Bishop accounted for all of Mazama's scoring. Young scored two goals and had an assist, while Bishop added one goal and two assists. Young has 17 goals on the year. All of the Vikings' scoring came in the first half. Mazama goalie Yolanda Hart posted the shutout. HENLEY 5, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 -- At Cave Junction, senior forward Kathy Mayer had two goals and one assist as Henley beat Illinois Valley. Katie Lynch added one goal and one assist for the Hornets, who improved to 4-3 in District 6 play. Becky Swartz and Crissi Giavia added one goal each for the Hornets. Nicole Pence registered the shutout in goal. Henley had a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal. District 6 Boys HIDDEN VALLEY 4, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0 -- At Murphy, Hidden Valley (5-2-1, 2-0 District 6) received good production from junior midfielders Matt Johnson and Seth GaRey. Johnson recorded his fourth hat trick of the year and GaRey added one goal and one assist. Hidden Valley took a 2-0 halftime lead on a GaRey goal off a Johnson assist and a Johnson goal off an assist by Kolt Campbell. Johnson then tallied both second-half goals. Hidden Valley sophomore goalie Tim VanderStoel posted his second straight shutout, but needed an outstanding save late in the game to preserve it.
