Two earn Merit Scholarships North Medford High School's Scott Searcy and South Medford's Sean Stephenson have won college-sponsored Merit Scholarships for the coming school year. They are among 2,400 scholarship winners around the nation in a program funded by colleges. Scott is receiving a Merit Scholarship from Oregon State University. He intends to study computer engineering. At North, Scott was a member of the honor society and vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America. He competed in science and math events and was in track and field. He was captain of the science bowl team and co-captain of the math team. Sean is receiving a Merit award from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He intends to study computer programming. At South, Sean was the captain of the math team, which qualified for state competition for four years. He has been a member of the school's chamber and concert choirs, the honor society, Brain Bowl team and the chess club. Sean has won a Rotary Club talent award, and has had leading roles in two school plays. He has been the assistant leader of a church youth group and is an Eagle Scout. The college-sponsored awards provide between $250 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the sponsoring institution. Recipients are chosen from a group of finalists in nationwide competition. Across the country, there are 117 private and 86 public institutions participating in the program.
