Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 22, 2005 You, too, can sponsor a fish and name it By MARK FREEMAN Mail Tribune Is there a Jim The Bullet on your Christmas list who would enjoy sponsoring a steelhead that could set Coquille River history? Sponsorships remain available for about half the 50 winter steelhead set for this year’s radio-tagging study on the Coquille. The sponsorship is a way for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to cover some of the cost of the radio-tagging program. The fish are captured, fitted with a transmitter and released. The fish will be tracked as they head out of tidewater, up to spawning grounds and out. The people or companies that sponsor the fish can name their steelhead and will receive updates on their fish’s activities throughout the winter. Advertisement The sponsorship covers the cost of the transmitters. Sponsors for fish with new transmitters pay $175, while sponsors for fish with older, used transmitters pay $150, says Shannon Osbon, the ODFW biologist conducting the study. The Port of Bandon, at the Coquille River mouth, sponsored two fish and named them after two longtime commissioners who died unexpectedly in separate instances in July 2004, says Gina Dearth, the port’s general manager. "Jim The Bullet" is named for the late Jim Fleck, a 23-year port commissioner, Dearth says. The sponsorship money was collected at Fleck’s memorial services, Dearth says. "Jim was a real avid angler, and a good one, too," Dearth says. "What better way to spend that money than to tag those fish and watch where they go." The other fish, which has not yet been caught and tagged, will be named after Bob Pierce, who was a commissioner for almost 20 years. Anyone interested in sponsoring a steelhead, either wild or hatchery, can call Osbon at the ODFW’s Charleston Field Office at 541-888-5515. — Mark Freeman Mail Tribune Home | Local News | Sports | Business | Obituaries | Life | Opinion AP News | Archives | Site Map | Community | Classified Copyright © 1997-2005 Mail Tribune, Inc.
