COLLEGE WRESTLING SOU's Burtis, Sether win challenge matches MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 6, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Nov. 6, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News ASHLAND — Kyle Sether of Oregon City and Clayton Burtis of Colton earned their way into the second-ranked Southern Oregon University wrestling team’s lineup Wednesday night with challenge-match wins in the 46th annual Black & Red Instrasquad at Riehm Arena. The Black squad, which was the more seasoned of the two, won 66-18. The event was a precursor to Friday’s season-opening dual meet, which will see the Raiders play host to 10th-ranked Menlo at 8:30 p.m. Sether, a freshman representing the Red team, reserved a spot in the 141-pound event of that dual by winning a 4-3 decision against Myrtle Point’s Tanner Canaday. A two-point reversal by Burtis, a returning All-American, in the final round of his bout with Alejandro Sandoval of Canby made him a 4-3 victor in the 285-pound finale. In the only clash featuring two nationally-ranked wrestlers, No. 9 Ryan McWatters upended No. 3 Jacob Abrams, 7-3, at 184 pounds. Recording pins were sixth-ranked Dalton Urrutia at 157 pounds, Ryan Jurgens at 184 and second-ranked Taylor Johnson at 197 — all for the black team. Devin Poppen (133) and top-ranked Brock Gutches of Central Point (174) scored technical falls. “We got through it without getting anyone hurt, we got our lineup set, and we’re looking forward to Friday,” said SOU coach Mike Ritchey.
