COLLEGE FOOTBALL No major incidents after Oregon's defeat Comment By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted Jan. 13, 2015 @ 12:01 am By The Associated Press Posted Jan. 13, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News EUGENE — Police in Eugene, Oregon, say a few outdoor fires were set Monday night in the wake of the Oregon Ducks' 42-20 loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff national championship game but no arrests or injuries were reported. Police put on extra patrols in advance of the big event but spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said there were no major incidents to report late Monday night. She says five or so outdoor fires burned chairs or debris but the fires were quickly extinguished. On campus, The Register-Guard reported that University of Oregon police Lt. Herb Horner said a group of students overturned recycling bins and tossed a lit sock into the trash. Horner said campus police, too, had extra officers on patrol. Fans resigned to the outcome began leaving the Wild Duck Cafe near the UO campus with more than two minutes left in the game. Elsewhere, students wearing Ducks' apparel quietly left the Global Scholars Hall where they had watched the game that was played in Arlington, Texas. Said 18-year-old freshman Erin Jones, "We still love the whole team. I hope we win next year." Meanwhile, in Columbus, Ohio, police used tear gas to disperse some Ohio State students and football fans following the Buckeyes' win. The cheers, chants and car horn blowing from people caused gridlock early Tuesday after revelers spilled out of bars near the campus, celebrating the university's win in the first national title game in college football's playoffs. Thousands converged on the Ohio State football stadium, where police turned them away. Most headed back to the bar area, where cruisers lined the street and officers limited pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The crowds began going home within about two hours. A police spokesman says there were 30 to 40 fires in trash cans and dumpsters. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.
