THEATER Camelot's 'Sweet Charity' a musical romp through misadventures in love Camelot stages Tony Award-winning 'Sweet Charity' Comment By Rebecca Scott Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Rebecca Scott Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM By Rebecca Scott Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Camelot Theatre sweeps audiences back to the 1960s with "Sweet Charity," the Tony Award-winning musical about the romantic adventures — and misadventures — of a dance hall hostess with the bad habit of giving her heart to the wrong man. “One of the reasons I did this show is because it’s fun,” says Camelot Artistic Director Livia Genise, who directs. “It totally encapsulates the 1960s. It’s like stepping into a time machine.” The show opens Friday, March 18, and runs through April 17 at the theater, 101 Talent Ave., Talent. With book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, “Sweet Charity” debuted on Broadway in 1966, directed by Bob Fosse and starring Gwen Verdon. The production ran for 608 performances. It was made into a film in 1969 starring Shirley MacLaine and revived again on Broadway in 1987 and 2005. “We have laughed our way through this six-week rehearsal process and just enjoyed watching each other sing, dance and grow as this delightful show took shape,” says Genise. Sarah Gore stars as Charity Hope Valentine, the dance hall hostess who sings, dances, laughs and cries through her hapless relationships. Gore, who also helped with choreography, has been seen in many other Camelot productions, including as Ado Annie in “Oklahoma,” Betty in “Sunset Boulevard,” Maggie in “45 Seconds from Broadway,” Peggy in “42nd St,” Babe in “Crimes of the Heart” and Katrin in “I Remember Mama.” “We’re lucky to have Sarah as Charity,” says Genise. “Every time she’s on stage, it just lights up.” The cast of characters includes Charity’s hardcore trio of girlfriends, a phony evangelist, Central Park “strollers” and others. Camelot favorite David King-Gabriel plays a hippie and an aging Italian movie star; Alex Boyles, who has worked as an understudy with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for the last two years, takes on the three different roles of Charlie, Oscar and a waiter. Musical numbers include "Big Spender," "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," “Baby Dream Your Dream,” and "If My Friends Could See Me Now," among others. The music will be performed by a live band, directed by Karl Iverson, who also plays keyboards. Other musicians are Lori Calhoun on woodwinds, Joe Fascilla on trumpet, Steve Sutfin on percussion and Holly Sutton on synthesizer. Choreography is by Rebecca K. Campbell, Camelot’s education director and artistic associate who was last seen at Camelot as King Herod in “Jesus Christ Superstar.” She's choreographed and/or directed many of Camelot's shows, among them “Oklahoma,” “42nd Street,” “The Sound of Music,” “Gypsy,” “The Secret Garden,” “Into the Woods” and “White Christmas.” Rounding out the cast are Kristin Calvin, Shannon Carter, Carrie Ann Eve, Olivia Harrison, George Herkert, Kathleen King, Eoghan McDowell, Alexa Nienhaus, Holly Nienhaus, Josh Nile, Grace Peets, CJ Reid, Erny Rosales, Jon Shaffer and Payne Smith. “Sweet Charity” previews Wednesday and Thursday, March 16-17. The March 16 performance is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Animal Shelter and tickets are $25. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets range from $29 to $35 and can be purchased at the theater's box office, online at www.camelottheatre.org or by calling 541-535-5250.
