My son has a jet ski and the required boat card to drive it on the lakes in Oregon. I would like to ride his jet ski when I go to the lake with him. Do I have to have a boater's license to ride it? — George S., Medford George, first things first. When are you guys going to the lake, and would he allow a handful of licensed Since You Asked wave riders to take a spin on the jet ski? You can get back to us on that. So long as your son has his boater's license and is driving the "personal watercraft," you, the passenger, do not need a license to ride. However, if you want to be skipper, you'll need to get your license or be accompanied by a card-holding adult, aged 18 or older. "For anything over 10 horsepower, the operator would need to take a boater safety course and apply for a boater education card," said Ashley Massey, public information officer for the Oregon Marine Board. Oregon does not have exemptions for age or experience so, George, if you want to ride solo, you'll need a boater's license. Online courses are available at www.boat-ed.com ($29.50), www.boaterexam.com ($29.95) and https://elearning.boatus.org (free). Or you can opt to take the class through Rogue Community College ($36). The course may take some time and cost a few bucks, but you can't put a price on a day on the lake with your son.
