The 63rd annual Rooster Crow finds its home once again in Rogue River Saturday and Sunday. For over six decades, roosters have come from far and wide to compete in the National Rooster Crowing Contest, and this year is no different. On Saturday, starting at 2:45 p.m., brown, red and spotted roosters of all sizes and shapes will be coaxed by their owners to deliver the most crows in 30 minutes. "It gets very creative," said Bryan Dorsey, president of the Rogue River Chamber of Commerce. Contestants have been known to experiment with a myriad of tricks to get as many crows out of their rooster as possible. Singing, talking and playing music are among the top strategies. The top five crowing roosters are awarded cash prizes. First place receives $150, a trophy and major rooster pride. You'd think that would be enough crowing for one weekend, but not in Rogue River. Also on Saturday is a human crowing contest. Yes, humans will compete for the most realistic impression of a rooster crow. Some past winners have been known to garner national attention. It's this incessant crowing that gives the Rooster Crow its specialness. "It brings us all together," Dorsey said. "It's about everyone getting together and spending time with one another," said Shelli Spencer, Rooster Crow coordinator. Crowing aside, the weekend festival will host a variety of events, such as the Rooster Crow Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday. Alice Hatch, a lifelong Rogue River resident, will be this year's grand marshal. Hatch, a founding member of the Woodville Museum, has attended every Rooster Crow since its inception in 1953. Speaking of the Woodville Museum, free tours will be given from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday along with an art show followed by live music from the Don West Band from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Back this year by popular demand are the Cal-Ore River Racers, who will fire up their boats near the Wayside boat ramp off Rogue River Highway starting at noon. If you want something a bit more sedate, check out the Rogue River Friends of the Library book sale, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the library. Sunday brings the annual Rooster Crow Car Show in downtown from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Throughout the weekend, there will be more than 100 vendors booths, including the popular Kitchen Lady, face painting, a dunk tank and a waterfall for kids, compliments of the Rogue River Fire Department.
