The two combined for 41 points as the Grizzlies earned a berth in the Class 2A state tournament Feb. 27-March 3 at Pendleton. The Challengers ended the season with a 13-11 record. Knotts scored 10 of his 22 points in the first quarter as Gilchrist built a 24-15 lead. After Cascade Christian went to a zone defense to slow down the senior forward, point guard Haynes picked up the slack, driving and dishing to teammates and scoring himself to the tune of 19 points. Meanwhile, Cascade Christian struggled from the outside. The Challengers were 3-for-20 on 3-point shots. "We werent attacking the basket as good as we wanted to," said coach Brian Morse. "That gave them some long rebounds and fast-break opportunities." Cascade Christian pulled to within five points with about 2 minutes left. A 3-pointer by Challenger Mychal Sha rimmed out, and Gilchrist got the rebound, ran time off the clock, then made a couple of free throws and began to pull away. "We had a great game plan," said Morse, "and we played them strong and tough. They were just a little better than us, but we didnt go down easy." Cascade Christian got 16 points from Stan Kelley, 12 and eight rebounds from Jordan Ferrell and 10 points from Sha.
