The three candidates will compete for Yesquen’s seat, Position 7, on the board in the May 19 district election. Vote-by-mail ballots for the election will be sent out Friday. Caballero said she is especially concerned about the Medford School District’s 67 percent graduation rate in 2013-14 and, in a phone interview, shared her ideas for improving it. “I’d like to see schools create a more welcoming environment so that the parents become more involved in their children’s education,” she said. In her job as cultural liaison coordinator for the Medford Police Department, Caballero said she has seen that education is key to future success and is many youths’ only “way out.” Parental involvement, she added, is crucial in correcting delinquent behavior and in holding kids accountable for their education. Caballero was active in her children’s schools before they graduated and has served on the school district’s Latino Advisory Committee and its Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee. She currently is a member of the Jackson County Homeless Task Force, the Hispanic Interagency Committee and the Jackson County Gang Task Force and serves on the boards of the Center for Nonprofit Legal Services board and the Jackson County Sexual Assault Response Team. She has lived in the valley more than 25 years and earned a respiratory therapist certificate from Rogue Community College. Her three children graduated from the Medford School District, two from South Medford High School and one from North Medford High School. Since 2011, Caballero has been working toward an associate of arts degree from Rogue Community College. She plans to get a bachelor’s degree from Southern Oregon University — not, she said, because she needs it to do her job but because she wants it for herself and is "passionate about education." Christiansen, a construction manager for Jackson County Roads, served on the Medford School Board from 2007 to 2010 but resigned to accept a job out of state. He's returned to the district, where his daughters attend Hedrick Middle School and North Medford High School while he serves on the district’s budget committee. “There’s a new superintendent now and a new set of players, and I think there will be some positive changes,” he said. “I want to be part of the solution and not just sit on the sidelines and complain about things.” He, too, would like to see the graduation rate go up, but also would like to see schools offer programs that give students the opportunity to learn a trade or special skill set in high school, which he said would produce “solid, productive citizens.” Nonetheless, Christian said he has a "realistic" idea of what can be accomplished in a four-year term and said one of his hopes would be to have "stable, more adequate funding for the school system." Christiansen holds an associate degree in public works engineering and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Oregon Institute of Technology, as well as a master’s degree in business administration from Regis University in Colorado. Libby, the owner and chief financial officer of Jackson County Security, ran unsuccessfully for Medford City Council in November. His brother, Jason Libby, is running for the Eagle Point School Board. Like Caballero, Libby would like to see parents more involved in their children’s schools. “I’m running to ensure that the school district of Medford stays with what I believe are my core values: taking care of students and teachers,” he said. Libby also is strongly opposed to Common Core State Standards, which Oregon adopted in 2010, and believes "the federal government should not have a hand in our state’s schooling system." Since graduating from South Medford High School in 2002, Libby has started two businesses, first a construction firm and, later, the security company. Libby did not pursue a post-secondary education and said the thought of returning to school after high school made him “upchuck a little ... ." His wife is a teacher in the Eagle Point School District, and he home-schools their two children, who also are enrolled in Logos Public Charter School. If elected, Libby said, he would be an approachable board member. “The perception I see right now is that the teachers don’t see the school board members, other than the rules that they pass,” he said.
