Medford toddler remains in critical condition Grand jury hears evidence against alleged attacker, Matthew Karl Hyrup, on Tuesday The toddler who suffered a sexual assault and severe beating allegedly by his stepfather remains in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. A grand jury on Tuesday heard evidence against Matthew Karl Hyrup, 27, of the 200 block of South Columbus Avenue, said Medford police Detective Jim Williams. Hyrup remains in Jackson County Jail after being arrested Thursday on first-degree assault and first-degree sexual penetration charges, both of which are Measure 11 crimes. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. Mercy Flights medical personnel responded to a call of a child in distress at the home at 4:22 p.m. Thursday. The 18-month-old boy was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where doctors found both internal and external injuries all over his body and determined the child had been severely beaten and sexually assaulted. The child was airlifted to Doernbecher's for further treatment, and he was listed in critical but stable condition, police said. Doctors called Medford police to report the abuse. The child had been in Hyrup's care while the child's mother, 24, had been out for a couple of hours, police said. The child's mother called 9-1-1 after discovering the injuries when she came home. She and Hyrup were married two weeks ago, police said. "The investigation indicates that Hyrup was responsible for the injuries," a statement in a press release from the Medford police said. Jackson County Circuit Court records show Hyrup has been convicted of multiple felony methamphetamine delivery and possession charges, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and driving with a suspended license. The investigation on the incident is ongoing. The case has been assigned to Jackson County Senior Deputy District Attorney Terry Smith-Norton, and the Department of Human Services' Child Welfare Division is involved.
