Maukonen noticed something might have been amiss Saturday, but she didn't have the burglary confirmed until the following day.  "I noticed things were different on Saturday, but because we've had so many contractors in and out of the building, I was not aware that a box of computers was missing until I went to inventory on Sunday," Maukonen said.  Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said the school had received the laptops — Google Chromebooks valued at $165 apiece — Aug. 12, and that the computers had been placed in the administrative offices.  Investigators said the school is undergoing construction and renovations, making the missing property hard to see at a glance.  "There were some things out of place," Budreau said. "There was a telescope that was lying in the hallway, an exit door that was ajar." Maukonen said she isn't sure whether the door to the room where the laptops were placed was locked.  "We're not sure whether the key was used to open the office or whether the office was left open," she said. "There are kind of two different stories." School officials are talking to contractors and security personnel who have been in the building. The computers had been purchased for students to use throughout the school day. Between the Chromebooks' value and the guitar's $150 price tag, the incident qualifies as a first-degree burglary. "It's a real bummer. I'm just thankful more wasn't taken," Maukonen said. "It could be worse, looking on the bright side."  Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact Medford police at 541-770-4784.  Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
