Despite calls promoting a benefit day of dredge mining reportedly coming in to businesses and agencies across the county, no such event is planned, officials warn. "We just want to warn agencies and businesses who may have been contacted by this individual," Jackson County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Andrea Carlson said. "We are not tied to it in any way." Sheriff's office officials said they and The Expo are not participating in this "unauthorized" event and are urging anyone called not to participate or attend. "There's a huge concern if we have a ton of people show up at The Expo ponds and there's nothing there or somebody gets hurt," Carlson said. Starting last week, the sheriff's department got reports from numerous area agencies and businesses on the calls about the bogus event. The male caller says The Expo and the sheriff's office are teaming up to assist the homeless population at the event, which he says will be Saturday, Oct. 4, at The Expo ponds.  The caller then switches gears, asking for assistance to mine gold in the ponds. He says a portion of the gold found will go to the homeless event — 10 percent of the total haul donated to the sheriff's department and another 10 percent donated to the Jackson County Fairgrounds. The sheriff's department is investigating the case. Carlson declined to release names of businesses and organizations that have been contacted but said it's been "all over the board." "It sounds like through the folks that have called in that this individual has definitely told many people and many different groups and organizations," she said. The calls are unique in the realm of bogus calls, she added. Typically, scam calls come with a demand to pay money or face some kind of consequence from imaginary bill collectors.
