Michael K. Harp was arrested Thursday and booked on 28 counts of burglary and theft. He remained in the Josephine County Jail Friday. Harp allegedly stashed stolen loot in a packed 20-foot storage container, the kind that would be hauled by a semi truck, according to police Lt. Todd Moran. Many of the victims lived outside the city limits, including the Merlin and Hugo areas, according to Moran. City police worked with the Josephine County Sheriff's Office on the case. "He was pretty prolific in the county," Moran said. "We recovered copious amounts of stolen property." Harp's charges include residential burglary, vehicle theft and 19 counts of first-degree theft, including two counts of aggravated theft involving losses of $10,000 or more. He also is accused of possessing methamphetamine. Search warrants were served Thursday at Harp's home on Northeast Pepperwood Drive and at a family member's home in the 1700 block of Drury Lane in south Grants Pass, where the storage container was found. The family member was unaware the goods were stored there, Moran said. A gold mining dredge was among the recovered stolen property, which also included hand tools and electronics. More than a dozen stolen guns were found, too. Harp allegedly tried to sell stolen items online, according to Moran. Police got a break in the case after Harp was found in a vehicle allegedly stolen from a home burglarized in the city. City police also got tips from the sheriff's office and then tried to home in on Harp. "We were trying to get that link to the city so we could assist with his crime wave," Moran said. "We had been getting info that he was almost trying to intentionally avoid the city," Moran continued. "It seemed he was skirting the city." In one county case, a vehicle was pulled into a victim's garage and the place was emptied of household items, including towels, silverware and soap. "There's so many victims," Moran said. "It gives them some closure. Burglaries are very personal crimes, in my opinion one of the most personal. Your house is your castle and you're supposed to feel safe.
