Raymond Antonio Enko, 19, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and first-degree unlawful sexual penetration Friday for penetrating the vagina of a 2-month-old baby with his finger, causing bleeding and tissue damage, in November 2014. Enko's girlfriend had been babysitting the infant while the mother was at work. He became annoyed and frustrated by the baby's crying and assaulted the infant when his girlfriend left the room, according to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. "I'm honestly affected by the depravity of what you did," Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia said before sentencing Enko to 16 years in prison. "Although I constantly see horrible things, this is difficult to fathom." Mejia said Enko's actions showed a lack of humanity. In a statement read in court, the baby's mother said she took a break while at work and saw she had 16 missed calls from the babysitter. A detective told her she had to go to the hospital because her baby was bleeding. The mother rushed to the hospital where her baby was being treated. Afterward, she said the baby could not sit comfortably, although the baby eventually recovered and appears to have suffered no permanent damage. The mother said it was torment watching everything her baby went through. Enko set out to hurt an innocent child who was only 2 months old, the mother said. But she said she hopes Enko will emerge from prison a better man. "The victim's mother gives us hope," Mejia told the teen. "Her desire that you come out of prison a better man is amazing. I'm not sure that's going to happen. Prison is not a good place to grow up." Court-appointed defense attorney Donald Scales said the case involved a then-18-year-old helping to babysit an infant under stressful circumstances and not handling his frustration well. "He was at the end of his rope that day," Scales said. "He's going to be punished severely for that." Staff reporter Vickie Aldous can be reached at 541-776-4486 or [email protected] .
