CRIME Man arrested on assault, DUII charges following serious Sunday crash in Medford Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Apr. 21, 2015 at 10:27 AM Updated Apr 21, 2015 at 3:43 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Apr. 21, 2015 at 10:27 AM Updated Apr 21, 2015 at 3:43 PM » RELATED CONTENT • Meth user sentenced for crash that injured five » Social News Police suspect a man who smashed his truck into a minivan and put a woman and her three children in the hospital Sunday was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the crash. David Americus Hixson, 52, who was also transported to the hospital, is lodged in the Jackson County Jail. He is held without bail on five counts of third-degree assault, DUII, reckless driving and a parole violation stemming from a past first-degree burglary conviction, jail records show. Records from Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon show the crash was reported at 10:46 a.m. A driver spotted Hixson driving his Ford Ranger erratically on Interstate 5, so the witness called 911 and followed the pickup south on Biddle Road. At one point, Hixson's vehicle allegedly crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and slammed into a minivan, driven by a 44-year-old woman who had her three children as passengers. "It was a side impact that was enough to remove the (driver's side) door of the vehicle completely," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. Hixson then continued driving for a short distance and crashed into a nearby irrigation ditch. Emergency medical workers took the woman and her children, a 7-year-old girl, and 9- and 10-year-old boys, to Providence Medford Medical Center. The children have been released and are doing well, police said. Their mother's condition at the hospital was not immediately available. Hixson was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, then was arrested Monday evening upon his discharge from the hospital. Police blocked off the crash site to traffic at 11 a.m. and had the scene clear by about 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Budreau said. Court records show Hixson has a history of felony convictions in Jackson County stretching back to 2003. They include possession of a controlled substance, unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, first-degree theft, aggravated first-degree theft and first-degree burglary. "He is very well known to us," Budreau said. "We have had countless run-ins with him over the years." Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
