Among the awards was Best Special Section for the annual Our Valley progress edition, the paper's fourth in as many years. The section was edited by Features Editor David Smigelski and the theme for 2014 was "Outdoors in Our Valley." Editor Bob Hunter and Opinion Page Editor Gary E. Nelson took home first-place awards for Best Editorial and Best Editorial Page, respectively. Former news editor Rob Galvin won a first-place award for Best Page One Design as well as third place for Best Local Column.  The paper took second in the association's General Excellence contest and third in the division for Best Web Design. Reporters Mark Freeman, Vickie Aldous, Damian Mann and Greg Stiles shared the division's top award for Enterprise Reporting for their weeklong series on the proposed Pacific Connector Gas Pipeline and its possible impact on Southern Oregon's environment and economy. The series was edited by City Editor Cathy Noah and included interactive elements by Web Editor Anita Burke. Stiles also won first- and second-place awards for Best Coverage of Business and Economic Issues for stories about digital currencies in the Rogue Valley and so-called "zombie foreclosures," respectively. Freeman won the General Feature Story category for a piece on grass skiing, while Mann took home a second-place award for Best Personality Feature Story. Emergency services reporter Sam Wheeler's coverage of a March 2014 police shooting in Medford won Best Spot News Coverage. Education reporter Teresa Thomas won both first- and second-place awards for Educational Reporting for her stories on high-achieving local graduates and the 2014 Medford School District strike, respectively. In the sports department, reporter Dan Jones won Best Sports Story, while Sports Editor Tim Trower claimed a second-place award for Best Local Column and third-place awards for Best Sports Story and Personality Feature Story. Trower and Jones also shared a third-place award for Best Special Section or Issue for the paper's 2014 prep football section with sports reporters Kris Henry and Frank Silow. Photographer Jamie Lusch won Best Feature Photo for his poignant image of a grandmother and her granddaughter kneeling at the grave of a family member who served in the Vietnam War. Photo editor and photographer Bob Pennell won second-place awards for Best News Photo and Best Graphics, as well as a third-place award in the latter category.
