Candidates for county positions report income, spending By JILL BRISKEY Mail Tribune His name isn't even on the May 21 primary ballot, but Democratic challenger John Hallett has already received more contributions than incumbent county commissioners Ric Holt and Jack Walker combined. The former Medford city councilman on Monday had a total of $15,050 in contributions, while Republican Walker reported $5,750 in donations and Holt $4,055. Candidates for Jackson County's open positions outlined their income and spending in campaign contribution and expenditure reports, which were due Monday at the county clerk's office. All candidates turned their reports in on time despite the additional stress of Monday's tax deadline, said clerk Kathy Beckett. "In this case, it's really awful. It's a double-whammy," Beckett said. "But most everybody turns theirs in on time. (When candidates miss the date) we have to turn them over to the secretary of state." Commissioner candidates facing off in the primary election include Republicans Curt Chancler and Walker for Position No. 3 and Republicans Diane Davidson, Walt Fitzgerald and Holt for Position No. 1. Beckett said the contribution and expenditure reports can be amended as the races continue. So far, Davidson is ahead of incumbents Walker and Holt with $6,700 in contributions. Republican Walter Fitzgerald only listed one donation of $1,424.91, with himself as the contributor. Topping the list of expenditures, Davidson has spent $3,671 at SpearCo Graphics in Medford. Hallett has paid Wimer Enterprises $1,800. Walker spent $1,355 at SpearCo Graphics for signs. Holt has spent nearly $600 on personal expenditures such as meals, gas and a cell phone. Hallett has racked up $249 on personal expenditures, including meals and grocery store purchases. "That's perfectly legal, as long as it's on behalf of the campaign," Beckett added.
