"But I have been too busy getting ready to come back here to use anytime there for anything else," he continued. ... "The most important thing overlooked by your farmers is irrigation. They will never be able to see beyond the ragged edge of their mortgages till they wash the old parchments downstream with the flood of irrigation. The next thing they need is organization. Community cooperation is the thing. They will never be able to meet modern conditions successfully until they invoke the aid of organized effort against the wrongs of which they complain. "But the farmers are human. Your business men should remember that. They should treat the producers decently. The success of the businesses of the city, in the final analysis, absolutely depends on the success of the farmers. The interests of the latter form the very foundation of community success and progress. He is, indeed, a very dull business man who cannot be made to understand that essential fact. "The growth of your city depends on the application of that principle to the development of the rural districts about it. If the latter fail, the city sleeps. And if the city sleeps, the sheriff too frequently helps to lock the doors of its business houses. "Tell your merchants and other business men, as well as your business organizations, to take good care of the farmers and the manufacturing enterprises. Encourage them substantially. Help them in every possible way. This investment of kindness will return big dividends in dollars and cents. It is sharp business foresight."
