Shawn Pappe, 45, pleaded no contest to a charge of second-degree arson Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court. With a no-contest plea, a defendant admits no guilt but concedes he likely would be found guilty if the case went to trial. "This was a bank-owned, foreclosed residence that previously belonged to Pappe," Donald Scales, Pappe's court-appointed defense attorney, said in court. "Other folks known to law enforcement were squatting there. He told them to leave. He was upset about not only losing his home, but about these people being in there." Pappe was sentenced to 18 months' probation and ordered to pay restitution for the fire. The restitution amount was not immediately available. Pappe has the right to contest the restitution figure. "I would like to get out of jail and get back to my family," Pappe said in court, speaking by monitor from the Jackson County Jail, where he has been held on $15,000 bail since his arrest March 20. On that day, a witness saw Pappe throw burning material into an outbuilding on the bank-owned property in the 800 block of Second Street in Gold Hill. The outbuilding was a total loss in the fire and the garage of a neighboring property on the block was damaged as well, according to an affidavit. "Pappe has made multiple threats to the occupants of the location and poured gasoline in the residence roughly three weeks ago stating he was going to burn the place down," the affidavit said.
