I was wondering if the city of Medford is seeing a reduction in their franchise fee payments from Charter Communications due to cord cutting? — Jason R., Medford Pew Research Center reported late last year 15 percent of American adults qualify as “cord cutters” who once had either cable or satellite TV but no longer do. Another 9 percent have subscribed to neither cable nor satellite service. Pew found that young adults, 18 to 29, are the most likely cord cutters, with 19 percent of them severing ties they once had with cable or satellite service. Medford has an older demographic than national figures, and apparently its television watching habits run counter to national habits, as well. Based on the franchise fee flow from Charter, City Finance Director Alison Chan reports Medford has not seen a steady decline in Charter revenue. The July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016, fiscal year is on track with the previous year, showing neither growth nor loss. The previous year, she noted, ran counter to national trends, with the city seeing 6 percent revenue growth.
