Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 18, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 18, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Oct. 18, 1915 THREE AUTOS MEET DISASTER A Peerless car, belonging to the Smith-Emery company, holding contracts for the development of the lithia springs project at Ashland, skidded on the Central Point section of the Pacific highway, a mile north of the P. & E. crossing late Saturday night and twisted the rear wheels and axle and otherwise damaged the car. The car was going at a high rate of speed. The machine was driven by a man by the name of Bell and crashed into a telephone pole. The pole was smashed to splinters. The top of the car was wrecked. The Stanley steamer used in the service between Ashland and this city in the passenger trade caught fire near the end of South Riverside Sunday night and was extinguished by the chemical wagon of the fire department. The front of the car was badly burned and is out of commission for a couple of days. A Ford car was reported wrecked near Tolo Sunday afternoon. MILLINERY COURSE OFFERED TO PUPILS OF HIGH SCHOOL For the first time in the history of the Medford high school, a course in millinery is being offered in the sewing department. The course is not given with the object of making the girls expert trimmers. The aim is to teach the girls the correct appreciation of millinery by learning the general principles which are applied in millinery as well as in dress, which consists of rhythm, balance, unity and color — to wear what is becoming and adapted to their own style, rather than to follow the extremes of fashion. The idea is to inculcate the habit of economy in working over or renovating last season's hats and old material. To do this effectively, it is necessary that the student become skillful in the use of the needle in order to handle the more difficult material. The course offered is proving to be a popular one as the students in the advanced classes are availing themselves of this opportunity and are very enthusiastic over it. While the work is purely industrial, there is an element of the vocation flavor in it.
