Tornado rebounds for boys soccer victory Mail Tribune/Drew Fleming After getting shut out in its boys soccer season-opener by Corvallis on Friday, North Medford wasted little time getting on the board against powerful South Eugene Saturday at District Field. The Black Tornado (1-1) capitalized on a penalty shot less than one minute into the game and went on to post a 3-0 victory. "We settled down and our offense finally got untracked," North Medford coach Rich Garcia said. "Both our offense and defense came together today. South Eugene and Corvallis were good tests for us this weekend. They come to play." After Babek Asgharian was fouled in the box early, Garcia called on defender Dustin Wallace to take the important kick. Wallace responded by booting a low shot into the right side of the net. "I had confidence when he went up there he would put it in," said Garcia. "Hes calm and he knows where he wants to put it." Just five minutes later the Black Tornado struck again on a quick transition from Josh Grace to junior Dan Torrey. When South Eugenes goalie came out to challenge, Torreys blast from 25 yards ended up in the net. Midway through the second half, North completed the scoring on Scott Jollys penalty kick. Senior first-year starter Jon Cotta recorded his first varsity shutout in the goal. Cotta made an excellent save in the second half when he jumped and deflected a shot over the goal. CORVALLIS 4, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 South Medford (1-2-1) played one of the states premier teams tough for a half before succumbing under a three-goal onslaught after intermission. The Spartans, ranked No. 1 early last year, are even better this year with 15 seniors, said South coach Dave Potter. Corvallis Garrett Chrostek scored at the 17th minute, then David Smith tallied twice and Seth Raleigh once in the second half. CRATER 4, MARSHFIELD 3 At Central Point, Crater controlled the possession time and received four goals from four different players in the non-conference match at Central Point Elementary. After Marshfield took a 1-0 lead, Crater scored on Todd Sesocks blast from 25 yards into the upper left corner of the net off an assist from Tristan Webb. Jason Bells extra effort provided an assist for Jason Licato as the Comets grabbed a 2-1 lead two minutes before halftime. The second half was scoreless until the last 13 minutes, the teams combined for four goals. Crater cushioned its lead on a breakaway by John Bowers off a pass from Aaron Kell 27 minutes into the second period. Crater (2-3) later got a goal from Edgar Silva. MOUNTAIN VIEW 4, ASHLAND 1 At Bend, defending Class 4A co-champion Mountain View scored four unanswered goals to thwart the Grizzlies in non-conference play. Ashland (1-1-1), which advanced to the state semifinals last year, took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game when Matt Sharp converted a penalty kick. Mt. Views Jake Norris tied the game in the 28th minute on a corner kick, and took the lead for good two minutes into the second half. CATLIN GABEL 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 1 At Portland, Hidden Valley dominated the opening half but had nothing to show for it as the teams left the field in a 0-0 tie. Second-ranked Catlin Gabel exploded for three straight goals after intermission, with Josh Duyan getting two of those. The Mustangs (3-1) scored at the 79th minute off a corner kick when Scott Palmer headed the ball to Ben Downing, who headed it into the net. Midfielders Evan Cope and Trevor Nowak played strong games for Hidden Valley. PHOENIX 2, SOUTH UMPQUA 0 At Talent, junior midfielder John Hendricks had a goal and an assist as Phoenix improved to 3-0 in non-league play at Hagler-James Park. After the teams played to a scoreless halftime tie, Hendricks gave the Pirates the lead 34 minutes into the second stanza with a shot from 12 yards out assisted by Chris Swann. Junior sweeper Al Albright provided the Pirates an insurance goal three minutes later and Hendricks was credited with the assist. ST. MARYS 6, EAGLE POINT 0 At Eagle Point, Brian Staver scored two goals and added an assist as the Crusaders rolled in a non-conference matchup. Greg Gradwell earned his second shutout of the season in goal as St. Marys improved to 2-0 and Eagle Point dropped to 1-3. Other St. Marys goals were by Phillip Jackmuth, off an assist by Sean Snider.; by Kawika Victor, off a Jackmuth assist; by Victory; and by Peter Staver, off a Brian Staver assist. Matt Burt and Ryan Burt assisted on Brian Stavers goals.
