The fire hasn't reached some pockets of brush deep within the interior , but it could as it continues to smolder until enough rain falls to end fire season in the fall. "Down in some of these draws, that are way in the interior of the fire, it hasn't really burned hot," fire spokeswoman Pam Sichting said. "And so there's still a component of fuels in there." That said, the smoke levels are expected to be minor, she added. "it's not going to be a column or anything like that," Sichting said, adding patrols likely will be watching the burned area through the summer. The lightning sparked fire, which roared to life June 11 after a lightning storm two days earlier, has grown to nearly 5,000 acres, though much of that amount is due to burnout operations along fire lines on the eastern and southern flanks. Those will continue with assistance from helicopter water bucket drops. The fire, burning about 10 miles southwest of Cave Junction in Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest lands, was 45 percent contained Tuesday morning. Crews are gearing up for the upcoming weekend, when high temperatures for much of the region are expected to rise into the triple digits "Interior fuels which have been smoldering could become more active," a news release from the interagency fire team reads. Close to 500 personnel remain on the fire, including 10 hand crews, a dozer, six engines, seven water tenders and 10 helicopters. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
