Pels fly past Eagles Amos, Klamath Union's fifth-year coach, saw the Pelicans take a 19-0 lead at intermission in the opening game of the season against Mazama, before losing 23-19. The Pelicans went into the break against Eagle Point with a 21-0 margin at Modoc Field. When the Eagles cut the lead to 21-13 early in the fourth quarter, Amos admitted remembering the Mazama loss. But the Pelicans' defense stiffened. And when Mike Mitchell came up with a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown with about three minutes remaining, Klamath Union had put its stamp on a 28-13 Southern Oregon Conference victory. "They came out in the second half, broke a couple of plays, and we missed a couple of tackles," said Amos, whose team won its second game in three outings. "Our kids grew up a little bit. They finally finished something they started." The Pelicans started strong against the Eagles (1-2, 0-1 SOC). KU scored on the opening possession of the game when Brad Mejia turned a broken play on a punt into a 79-yard touchdown gallop. It was Mejia's seventh TD in three games. The Pels (2-1, 1-0 SOC) went 43 yards in eight plays to score again in the first quarter. Shawn Anderson completed the drive with an 11-yard touchdown on a fullback trap up the middle. Jeff Pisan added a 9-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jeff Mortenson early in the second quarter to give the Pels a comfortable 21-0 margin. Eagle Point took the second-half kickoff and ended a sustained drive on Vic Shelton's 1-yard TD run. The Eagles kept the march alive with a 21-yard fake punt by Sam Dodenhoff and a 37-yard run by Shelton. Eagle Point dominated the third quarter by running 22 plays to only five for the Pels. Shelton scored early in the fourth quarter on his second 1-yard TD run to cut the Eagles' deficit to 21-13. But when Mitchell stepped in front of Robert Slayton's pass in the flat and went the distance, KU sealed the victory. Klamath Union compiled 361 yards in offense to 247 for Eagle Point. Mejia led all rushers with 159 yards on 18 carries. Shelton rushed 18 times for 109 yards for the Eagles.
