Skyline streak ends for Phoenix boy swimmers Sunday Jan 28, 2018 at 2:00 AM GRANTS PASS — For the first time in 17 years, the Phoenix boys swim team came up short at the all-Skyline meet. Klamath Union won with 89 points, followed by Phoenix with 66 Saturday at the Grants Pass YMCA. The standout performer for the Pirates was Alec Shepherd, who won two main events, the 100-meter butterfly and 100 backstroke, and was also part of winning 400 freestyle relay team that included Devin Wenaus, Trevor Welch and Max Duffie. On the girls’ side, Phoenix placed last among six teams. Henley more than doubled-up runner-up Mazama to win the meet. CLASS 5A TRIPLE DUAL: At the Medford YMCA, the Ashland boys swept Marist and host Crater, while the Marist girls bested both Ashland and Crater in a triple dual in which Cascade Christian also participated. Chris Frownfelter, a sophomore who qualified for state last year, won two events, the 100 free and the 100 backstroke, to pace the Ashland boys. The top performer for the Ashland girls was Alexandra Westrick, who set PRs in winning both the 200 free and 500 free. For Cascade Christian, Braedon Scaglione captured first place in the 100 breaststroke. Boys Basketball RV ADVENTIST 48, NORTH LAKE 45: Ruben Tovar made four free throws and Malachi Sitowski had a breakaway basket down the stretch as Rogue Valley Adventist held on for the Mountain Valley League home win. Michael Covrig made four 3-pointers in the first half to help stake the Red Tail Hawks (9-10, 3-6 MVL) to a double-digit lead. He finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Tovar had 17 points, and Marcus Wiggers contributed eight rebounds for RVA, which fell into a 42-all tie in the fourth before deciding it. TRIAD 80, PROSPECT 14: At Klamath Falls, host Triad pulled away early against Prospect to pick up a Mountain Valley League victory. Brendan Raines had eight points to lead the Cougars (1-16, 0-9 MVL), who lost their 12th consecutive game. The Timberwolves (14-5, 7-1) won their sixth straight. Girls Basketball RV ADVENTIST 33, NORTH LAKE 26: After a sluggish third quarter in which visiting North Lake deployed increased defensive pressure, Rogue Valley Adventist regrouped in the final period to secure a Mountain Valley League victory. Leaders for the Red Tail Hawks (17-1, 7-1 MVL) were Paris Quave (12 points, three assists), Savanah Zamora (nine points, five assists, eight rebounds, three steals) and Zoe Belovitch (eight points, seven rebounds, two steals). Rachel Baker finished with a game-high 14 points for the Cowboys (11-6, 4-3). TRIAD 67, PROSPECT 15: At Klamath Falls, Alivia Fulton reached double-figure scoring with 10 points for Prospect, which fell to to host Triad in a Mountain Valley League game. Abigael Kintsler scored her first basket of the season for the Cougars (3-15, 1-7 MVL), who didn’t have an answer for Triad’s sister duo of Mae Drost (20 points), a sophomore, and Kate Drost (17 points), a freshman. The Timberwolves (14-5, 6-2) have won six in a row.
